Why it matters: The sequel to the 2004 original brings Phyre to a five-district Seattle with six playable clans and cross-clan Disciplines. Who should care: Fans of the 2004 cult classic and anyone wanting an action RPG built around vampire powers and World of Darkness factions.
Setting & Narrative
Players control the Elder vampire Phyre, who awakens in early 21st-century Seattle during a historic snowstorm. The city’s Camarilla is reeling from a failed coup and a renewed inquisition, and Phyre becomes entangled in conflicts between vampire factions, hunters, and the resurgent Sabbat. A central mystery involves a brand suppressing Phyre’s powers.
The narrative was praised by critics, though the game received mixed reviews overall, with criticism directed at gameplay and design. The title also failed to meet the studio’s sales targets, resulting in significant financial loss.
World Structure & Gameplay
Seattle is rendered as a seamless open world divided into five districts: Uptown, Financial, Downtown, Chinatown, and Industrial. Movement between districts requires no loading. The game is presented primarily in first-person, with third-person used for certain actions and conversations. Core activities include traversal, investigation, dialogue, and supernatural combat.
Players customize Phyre’s gender, hair, clan, and outfits. Six clans are available: Brujah (close-range melee), Tremere (blood sorcery), Banu Haqim (stealth), Ventrue (mental manipulation), Toreador (seduction), and Lasombra (shadow manipulation). Each clan has a unique passive ability, and players can access Disciplines from other clans by forming alliances and feeding on other vampires. Cross-clan Discipline costs vary based on alignment with the player’s chosen clan.
| Clan | Ability |
|---|---|
| Brujah | close-range melee |
| Tremere | blood sorcery |
| Banu Haqim | stealth |
| Ventrue | mental manipulation |
| Toreador | seduction |
| Lasombra | shadow manipulation |
Combat & Progression
Feeding on humans replenishes the blood resource used to power Disciplines. Phyre possesses supernatural strength, speed, durability, telekinetic abilities, and sensory powers such as detecting heartbeats through walls. Combat combines physical attacks with vampiric powers, including abilities like Blood Curse, Possession, Recall, and mass Hypnosis. Powers can be combined—for example, using mind control to disarm enemies and telekinesis to steal their weapons. Enemy types include humans, ghouls, and other vampires with their own supernatural counter-abilities.
Development History
Development originally began at Hardsuit Labs in the mid-2010s. After successive delays and production issues, the project shifted to The Chinese Room in 2021. The new studio retained the Christmas-time Seattle setting and much of the original art direction but rebuilt the game with a revised RPG system and narrative. Additional delays followed before the final October 2025 release. Directors included Alex Skidmore, Dan Pinchbeck, and Ed Daly.
