With the release of Vessel of Hatred, Diablo IV reintroduced the iconic Runeword system from Diablo II in a modern form. By pairing Runes of Ritual (action triggers that generate Offering) with Runes of Invocation (effects that consume Offering), players can bestow any character class with cross-class abilities, automated barrier defenses, and game-changing teleportation skills.

Key Takeaways

  • Two-Part Runeword Formula: A functional Runeword requires exactly one Rune of Ritual + one Rune of Invocation socketed into two-socket equipment (Chest, Two-Handed Weapons, Helms).
  • Offering Generation: Ritual runes generate Offering by moving, drinking potions, casting cooldowns, or suffering crowd control.
  • Mercenary Reinforcement: Hired mercenaries (Subo, Raheir, Varyana, Aldkin) provide passive aura buffs and can be programmed with trigger conditions to assist during boss staggers.

Mercenary Hiring & Reinforcement Setup

  1. Primary Companion: HIRE Raheir the Shieldbearer for high-tier Pit pushes. His “Bastion” passive grants complete invulnerability against lethal attacks for 2 seconds with a 30-second cooldown.
  2. Reinforcement Trigger: ASSIGN Subo the Bounty Hunter to fire his Wire Trap whenever you cast your primary crowd-control ability, providing 100% vulnerable status uptime on elite packs.

Socketing Logistics

Runewords can only be inserted into items with two linked sockets. If your legendary or unique item dropped with one socket, visit the Jeweler in Kurast to punch an additional socket using Scatter Prisms.

Rune Economy: Rarities, Crafting and the Season of Witchcraft Additions

Runewords are only half the story; the other half is the Rune economy that feeds them, and Blizzard’s 2.0 PTR notes spell out the rules a build planner needs. Runes are tradeable and stack, and they live in a dedicated socketable inventory tab rather than the gem bag. Because a Runeword occupies both sockets of a single item, a character can run a maximum of two Runewords — four Runes total — and the same Rune cannot be equipped twice. A build that wants to double up on one effect therefore has to find a different trigger or a different item; there is no way to stack the identical Rune.

Rarity sets the ceiling. Runes ship in three grades — Magic, Rare and Legendary — and the higher the rarity, the more potent the effect. At Vessel of Hatred’s launch Blizzard listed seventeen Runes of Ritual and twenty-eight Runes of Invocation, each Ritual Rune generating Offering and each Invocation spending it. When a Ritual Rune produces more Offering than its partner needs, the surplus feeds Overflow, a bonus rider on many Invocation effects. That is the lever behind most “why did my Runeword suddenly hit harder” questions: the pair did not change, the meter simply overfilled.

The economy solves duplicate problems at the Jeweler. Three Runes with the same name craft a single new Rune that is guaranteed to differ from the inputs, and if the inputs were non-Legendary there is a chance the result rolls the next rarity up. Runes also feed the Mythic Unique recipe: each target Mythic needs one Resplendent Spark plus ten Legendary, ten Rare and ten Magic Runes of specific names. That is the reason to keep a tidy stock of low-rarity Runes even when the current build does not socket them.

Season of Witchcraft widened the pool. Vessel of Hatred owners gained two Legendary Runes of Ritual and one Rare Rune of Invocation. Nagu is listed at 100 Offering and asks the character to maintain at least one active Summon for five seconds, gaining Offering for each Summon up to six. Igni is listed at 25 Offering but stores Offering every 0.3 seconds, releasing the stored pool when the character casts a non-Basic Skill, up to a 500 Offering ceiling. Chac is a Rare Invocation costing 20 Offering that invokes Druid Lightning Bolts on a nearby enemy for 220% weapon damage, with Overflow adding more bolts. The pattern is a Ritual Rune that rewards a sustained state and an Invocation that converts stored Offering into a burst — the opposite rhythm from the movement-triggered pairings at the top of this guide.
